Weathering Bad News

Not everything bad is a crisis, but facing bad news without expert guidance is the surest way to take a situation from bad to worse. Wiley is widely known and regarded as one of the region’s more reliable bad news managers. While he relishes the chance to work with organizations before a crisis hits to ensure that they are prepared, the truth is that most of his clients come to him as bad news is breaking around them. That’s where his decades of crisis communication management kick in and his clients start to pull out of their dive. Retaining Wiley to deal with bad news tends to be a relatively short assignment. Wiley’s involvement with a client is rarely more than a month or two. The legacy, though, of how the situation was handled can live on for years. You want that legacy to be a good one.

Coaching Executives

Even tennis greats have coaches, so why not executives who are champions in their own fields? Wiley helps leaders chart their communication style and skills, then helps them enhance what they naturally do well and diminish those things that are getting in the way of communicating better.  Strong leaders tend to benefit most from this kind of coaching because they often are committed to being better, more effective executives. Each coaching assignment is unique. Some are looking for ways to improve how they might motivate their employees. Others wish to ensure that their directions are clear and concise with little room for misunderstanding. A coaching assignment can be as short as a couple months, but also might continue with no end date.

Benchmarking

Many people believe that writing is subjective. The fact is, though, that the clarity of one’s writing can be measured and scored. Clients use Wiley’s benchmarking services mainly in two ways. First, he can provide a number-based rating, along with a narrative, for an individual writer that can be compared to others. This data is helpful when doing employee evaluations. More importantly, though, is that it is useful to find what an individual needs to do to write more clearly and concisely. The second way clients use Wiley’s Reader MeterTM service is to gauge the clarity of key emails, letters, reports and presentations before they are sent to others. Reader MeterTM is a flat fee service that generally can be turned around in less than 24 hours. Another use of Wiley's benchmarking service is to determine the level of writing used by a medium being pitched. This data can be used to refine the pitch to increase its success rate.

General Consulting

Wiley’s 35 years of experience as both a communications executive and a business owner has given him wisdom and perspectives on how to deal with a variety of business opportunities and challenges.
